The Sacred Site focal point of the Coos Bay America Omniangels is the Cape Arago (Cape Gregory) Lighthouse, which is located on Gregory Point southwest of the Coos Bay entrance near the city of Charleston in Coos County, Oregon, U.S.A. The light station was first established in 1866. There were two previous towers. In 1866, the original optic a Fourth Order Fresnel Lens was installed. The first octagonal shaped, wrought iron tower and lantern was constructed in 1866 and painted white. The dome of the lantern was painted red. The tower was blown up with dynamite in 1936. Constructed in 1908, the second octagonal shaped tower was a wood frame building. Later on the lighthouse was moved a short distance eastward, the tower was removed, and the building served as keepers quarters until it was razed in the 1960's. The one and a half storied keepers quarters constructed in 1896 of wood frame in the Duplex architectural style was razed in 1957. Constructed of reinforced concrete on a concrete foundation, the existing octagonal attached to fog signal building light was 44 feet high. The white tower with a green lantern and a red dome was first lit in 1934. The existing sound signal building was constructed in 1934 of concrete in the Attached to Tower architectural style. The fog signal type was a FA 232 Diaphram Horn.
Still operational, the light was automated in 1966.
The present optic is a VRB-25 Solar Powered Lens installed in 1998. The original Fourth Order Fresnel Lens is on display
by the U.S. Coast Guard Group in North Bend, Oregon. An active guide to navigation managed by the U.S.
Coast Guard, the exterior of Cape Arago Lighthouse was repainted and repairs
were made in 1998.
