The Sacred Site focal point of the Midwest Shoreline America Omniangels is the Thunder Bay Island Lighthouse, which is located on the southeast end of Thunder Bay Island in Lake Huron near the city of Alpena in Alpena County, Michigan, U.S.A. The light station was first established and first lit in 1832. The original optic was a Fourth Order Fresnel Lens. Constructed of brick on a dressed stone and timber foundation, the light was 50 feet high. The conical shaped attached tower was white with a red lantern. In 1857, the lighthouse was heightened. The the storied existing Keepers Quarters were constructed in 1868 of brick in the Rectangular Attached architectural style. In 1892, the existing sound signal building was constructed of brick in the Rectangular architectural style. Fog signal type was a diaphone/bell.
Thunder Bay Island Light Station is situated in a
National Wildlife Refuge. The island provides habitat for endangered species and
nesting for migratory birds. Automated in 1980, the light is still operational as
an active guide to navigation. The present optic is a 190 MM Lens. The U.S. Coast Guard lease the light station to the
Thunder Bay Island Preservation Society.
