The Sacred Site of the
Afghanistan Kandahar Omniangels is the Arghandab Valley area in the vicinity of
Kandahar (Qandahar), which is located in the southern plateau region in Kandahar
province on the Arghandab River about 3,297 feet (1,005 meters) above sea level
in southern Afghanistan.
The Helmand River, the longest river in Afghanistan,
arises in the Hindu Kush and flows for three hundred fifty miles before merging
with the Arghandab at Qala Bost, and, then flows two hundred fifty more miles
before reaching the Sistan Basin. The second largest city in Afghanistan and the
capital of Kandahar province, the city of Kandahar is a major trading center
that is situated at an elevation of 3,500 feet.
Kandahar was first established by Alexander in the
fourth century BCE near the site of Mundigak, a settlement founded in 3000 BCE. One of the theories about the origination of the name
of Kandahar for the city was that it was derived from the name of a nearby
kingdom mentioned in the Mahabharata Indian Epic called Gandhara.
Because of its Central Asia location, Kandahar has
been conquered often by different empires like the Iranian Achaemenid, Indian
Ashoka, and Kushan Kanishka. Kandahar came under the control of Arabs in the
seventh century, the Turkic Ghaznavid in the tenth century, Genghis Khan in the
twelfth century, Timur in the fourteenth century, and Babur (Mughal empire) in
the sixteenth century. Other conquerors include Persian Shahs, Mir Waiz, and
Turko-Iranian Nadir Shah.
In 1747 ACE, the founder of Afghanistan, Ahmad Shah
Durrani, took over the city and made it the capital of his Afghan kingdom. He
laid out the old city which also housed his mausoleum. Later on, Kabul became
the capital of Afghanistan in the 1780's. British forces occupied the city from 1839-1842 ACE,
and, the Russian forces occupied Kandahar from 1979-1989 ACE.
Although diverse Iranian tribes predominated during
the early days of Kandahar, the Pashtuns have been the primary tribal group over
the years. The Pashtuns honor their own tribal code of conduct which has become
known as Pashtunwali. For example, the Pashtuns conducted a jihad against the
oppressive control of the Ranjit Singh Sikh regime.
After the withdrawal of the Russian troops, Kandahar
continued to fall under the control of others. Then towards he end of 1994, the
Taliban conquerors set out from the city and began to wage their battles to take
over the eastern, central, and southern areas of Afghanistan. The influence of the Taliban
was removed from Kandahar from 2001-2002, but, small bands of them still
infiltrated nearby provinces. A Pashtun warlord, who was in charge of the
province and the city before the Taliban took over, has regained control of the
area.
