The Sacred Site of the Middle East Beirut Omniangels is Pigeon Rocks (Raouché), Beirut Harbour, Beirut, Lebanon, which is located on a spur where the narrow coastal plain projects into the Mediterranean Sea and backed by the Lebanon Mountains in Lebanon. Beirut is the largest city and main seaport in Lebanon was originally called Beroth city of wells by the Phoenicians. This ancient settlement was first mentioned in an Amarna letter cuneiform tablet around the fifteenth century BCE. Beirut was destroyed by Diodotus Tryphon in 140 BCE in his pursuit of the Seleucid monarchy throne. It was soon reconstructed in Hellenistic Roman style. First century BCE coins show the head of the goddess of fortune, Tyche on one side with the city's dolphin entwined anchor symbol on the other side. When the city was under Roman rule, Justinian derived a large part of his Pandects corpus of laws from two Phoenician jurists, Papinian and Ulpian who taught at the Beirut school of law. Beirut first came under Arab control in 635 ACE, and, was the center of Arab intellectual activity in the nineteenth century. French engineers helped built a modern harbor in 1894 ACE and a railway across Lebanon to Damascus and Aleppo. After World War I, Beirut and all of Lebanon was given to the French. After World War II, Lebanon was granted its independence with Beirut as its capital city. Beirut continued to be the intellectual center for the Arabs until 1975, when civil war broke out between the Muslim western part of the city and the Christian eastern part. After the civil war ended, the people of Lebanon rebuilt Beirut and the city is once again a Middle East cultural and intellectual center. An archaeological excavation in 1994 ACE found that the modern day Beirut street, Souk Tawile, still followed the lines of an ancient Hellenistic Roman street.
