The Sacred Site of the Middle East Mari Omniangels is the ancient city of Mari, which was situated on Tell Hariri, about eleven kilometers northwest of modern day Abu Kamal on the western bank of the Euphrates River in Syria. Mari was inhabited from around the 5th millenium BCE until about 1759 BCE when Hammurabi desecrated the city. In Biblical Times, Abraham passed through Mari on his way from Ur to Harran. The remnants of Mari were discovered in 1933 when a Bedouin tribe dug though a mound looking for a stone suitable for the gravestone of a deceased tribesman. During their digging they found a headless statue. Archaeologists from the Louvre in Paris began excavations of the site in December of that year. Within a month the Temple of Ishtar had been discovered and the Mari archaeological site had been designated as the most westerly outpost of the Sumerian culture. More than 25,000 Akkadian language cuneiform clay tablets were also found at Mari. Part of the Mari state archives, the records on the cuneiform tablets have caused archaeologists to completely revise ancient Near East historical dates. The Mari cuneiform tablets also listed over five hundred previously unknown place names, sufficient to drastically revamp the ancient world geographical map. With the exception of a period from 1939-1951, archaeological excavations of the six hundred by one thousand meters Mari area have continued from 1933 until the present day. By 2005 archaeologists had unearthed less than half of all the stratum at the Mari archaeological site. Archaeological findings to date indicate that most of the inhabitants of Mari were Semitic peoples from the Elbaite Akkadian migration. Strategically situated as a trade center between northern Syria and lower Mesopotamia, the city of Mari managed trade routes between such regions as Aleppo, Anatolia, Carchemish, Ugarit, Ur, and Western Iran that dealt with commodities like dates, grains, olives, porcelain, pottery, and stone. Mari was renown for the splendor of the 300 room palace built by King Zimri-Lim which the Kings of Aleppo and Ugarit wanted to stopover at on their journeys. Considered to be influenced by Mesopotamian culture, the peoples of Mari were known for their ornate clothing and hair styles. They also revered numerous Sumerian dieties including the fertility goddess Ishtar, the weather god Dagan, and the sun god Shamash. The fortunes of Mari waxed and waned over the ages, reaching a nadir point when Hammurabi invaded the city. Afterwards, Mari was reduced to no more than a village occasionally inhabited by Assyrians and Babylonians. Then after the Greeks arrived in the area, Mari disappeared completely.
