The Sacred Site focal point of the America Princeton Virtue Omniangels is the Princeton Battlefield State Park, which is located south of Princeton, New Jersey, U.S.A. On January 3, 1777, an American Revolutionary War battle, known as the Battle of Princeton, was fought south of Princeton. The outcome of the battle has been considered a great victory, akin to the battle of Trenton, by American Historians since the Crown forces lost control of most of New Jersey to the Continental forces at that time. The evening following the Second Battle of Trenton, General Washington stealthily slipped away while some of his soldiers masked his departure behind large campfires. The army marched over a backroad until it reached Stony Brook and the Quaker Bridge about a mile south of the town. A stronger bridge had to be swiftly constructed to support the ammunition carts and cannons. While this was being undertaken, General Washington sent part of his troops under General Sullivan to the rear of the College of New Jersey (now known as Princeton University) and part of his troops under General Green to prevent traffic on the Princeton-Trenton Highway. Before General Green's division of around 3,400 men had arrived at the highway; however, General Mercer's brigade of around 1,200 men came across the elements of a British brigade led by a British officer who launched a violent firefight assault against them in an orchard. On the battlefield, a wounded and dying General Mercer rested beneath an oak tree. Later on the New Jersey county where the battle took place was named Mercer County in his honor. The Mercer County seal has a picture of an oak tree on its seal. The original Oak Tree died in 2000 and was replaced by a scion grown from one of its own acorns. General Washington rode up and rallied General Mercer's men as a brigade of around 2,100 reinforcements under General Cadwalader arrived with an artillery battery. Then General Sullivan arrived with an additional 1,300 men forcing the British soldiers to retreat by charging to break through the Continental soldier battle lines. The British eventually retreated to New Brunswick; while, a small contingent of troops left behind at Princeton surrendered. The victory at the battle of Princeton, significantly bolstered the moral of the Continental Army troops and resulted in 8,000 new recruits. Today the Princeton Battlefield State Park is managed by the New Jersey Division of Parks and Forestry.
