The Sacred Site focal point of the China Leshan Virtue Omniangels is the Leshan Giant Buddha, which is located at the confluence of three rivers (Dadu, Minjiang, Qingyi) near the city of Leshan in the southern part of Sichuan Province in western China. Sculpted out of a stone cliff face, the seventy-one metres tall, Leshan Giant Buddha is the tallest Buddha Statue in the world. The river waters flow beneath the feet of the Giant Buddha stone sculpture which faces Mount Emei Shan. The stone sculpture was a depiction of a seated broad shouldered (twenty-eight metres wide) Maitreya Buddha with his hands resting on his knees. When viewed from the river, the Leshan Giant Buddha appears to be located at the heart center of the mountain range which resembles a slumbering Buddha. A local adage, The mountain is a Buddha and the Buddha is a mountain, underscores the harmonious congruity between the compassionate bodhisattva and the Natural World landscape. According to legend, a Chinese monk named Haitong began the Giant Buddha sculpture project circa 713 ACE in the hopes that the presence of a Buddha in the area would ensure safe passage of ships travelling down the river by calming the often tumultuous waters. The sculpture was eventually completed by his disciples ninety-years later. During the creation of the sculpture, a large quantity of removed stone was deposited in the river waters that flowed beneath the feet of the Giant Buddha, calming the formerly turbulent currents. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996, the Leshan Giant Buddha Scenic Area is part of the Mount Emei Shan Scenic Area. The 3,099 metres (10,167 feet) high Mount Emei, is one of the Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains of China.
